Carried by the Water (Venice and the Islands)

What draws me to a city whose limited space has remained almost unchanged for centuries, where landmarks are crowded together, and where it feels like you’ve seen it all before?

Venice has simply captivated me with its unique combination of light, water, and history. The interplay of sunlight, shadow, and reflections creates an atmosphere that continuously enchants me.

Almost every view demands to be immortalized as a picture. Even amidst decay and the onslaught of crowds, the majestic palazzi along the Grand Canal and the narrow alleyways, where time seems to stand still, still exude their pride and the grandeur of wealth and power from a bygone era. Every corner of the city invites me to explore stories of adventures, political intrigues, and the VIPs and artists of the past. And it’s simply fun to hunt down the spots that served as backdrops for countless movies.

Chiesa San Barbara

This seemingly absurd idea of building a city in the middle of the water. This adventurous construction of countless oak and larch piles driven deep into the lagoon as a foundation for houses and streets. The whole concept and its execution seem to spring from a surreal fantasy. It is fascinating how this city has withstood the forces of nature and the masses of people for centuries - or perhaps because of it.

Thanks to a weekly pass, I can get around using the public water buses, the Vaporetti, and every trip is a small adventure where everyday life and the city blend with the water. And a trip to the islands for a change is so quickly done. To the Lido for a relaxing beach day with a Spritz at the beach bar, to Murano for the glass, to Burano for the colorful houses, and to Torcello for the restaurants and the view from the bell tower.

In this city, I don’t just explore the well-known sights or wander aimlessly. For me, it offers a fascinating variety of cultural experiences. I visit large and small museums that captivate me with ever-changing exhibitions on photography as well as modern and classical art. In historic palazzi, I delve into life from different centuries and admire the impressive buildings not only from the outside but also in their magnificent interiors. Every corner tells its own story, and I am continually inspired anew.

Even for the main attractions, there are new perspectives to discover, like a behind-the-scenes tour of the Doge’s Palace or a visit to the clock tower of San Marco.

Despite the many tourists, Venice remains unique and enchanting. Off the beaten paths, I still find places that exude tranquility - like hidden courtyards, small cafés, peaceful side canals, or simply Venice as dusk falls.

The golden hour

Venice is a place that defies time, offering an unparalleled blend of beauty, history, and emotion.
